Free Open-source Software

Bill Wilson of Ylem provided a second presentation on free software available to businesses. Bill is a well-regarded designer of software, and he explained whilst Microsoft appear to dominate the UK computer software market, “open source software” provides a free alternative. Bill explained that we are all using open source software already, in our mobile telephones and vehicles amongst other things. He cited examples where companies he has come across have spent a lot of money on systems unnecessarily. Some other points of note were:
- Ensure you select software systems that will cope with any future expansion you are planning – this avoids having to change over, which is time consuming and can be expensive.
- Learn what shortcuts the software can offer, to save time.
- Use on-line forums for further information or trouble-shooting purposes.
